What is Dow Jones?
To be precise, the formal name is Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and is a stock market index that tracks 30 large, publicly-owned blue-chip companies trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq.
The index was created by Charles Dow in 1896 to serve as a proxy for the broader U.S. economy, and it is thus the oldest index in the US. The more famous and benchmarked index S&P 500, was construed much later.
The DJIA is price-weighted index, meaning that the stocks with higher prices have a greater influence on the index’s performance. Hence, this is not a market-weighted average, like S&P 500 is. The DJIA is one of the oldest and most commonly followed equity indexes, and it is considered to be a gauge of the broader U.S. economy.
