Is It Possible To Make Money Day Trading? My numbers July 2012 – July 2013
I have previously written some articles about the possibility of making money day trading:
From mid-2011 until mid-2012 I was going through a tough time trading. I hardly made any money. At the same time, I was moving to a foreign country and I had a lot of stress.
In June 2012 I did a lot of research and started different strategies. Since then I have made steady progress and been profitable all months. I’m not making nearly as much as I did in previous years, but right now I manage to make a decent living out of this.
- I traded 244 days
- 182 profitable days (75%)
- All months profitable
- Worst day: 4 254 USD in losses on 29th of May 2013
- Best day: 3493 USD on 7th May 2013
- I ended the last 5 days of June 2013 with all losses (new record)
I was not trading on two of the most profitable days (theoretically).
By writing this blog I have come in contact with a Latvian programmer (and trader) and we’ll start trading together in August.
Hopefully, we can automate absolutely all trading, at least he has been working with a trading program for the last two months. We’ll start with three different strategies when he’s done. If this program is successful, it has paid back all the work I have put into this blog!
As of now, I’m only trading mean reversion strategies.

great performance! how much capital did you trade with?
Hi, this is mainly prop, but also an account at Interactive Brokers. So return on capital makes no sense. I have a pure swingtrading account as well, I write about that later.
Congratulations on your results. That’s an impressive profit curve. How many trades did you make over the 244 days?
Hi, Thanks. I made about 13 000 trades during that time.
Would I be correct that for the 2012/2013 year (244 days) you made an average of about $7.50 per trade?
Take care
Gabe
Actually, I think it’s lower, about 5 usd per trade. Quite marginal.
I was looking at your equity chart above which shows you equity at trade 241 to be around 95K. That is how I got to the 7.50. But I could be reading your chart incorrectly.
Nevertheless, most people would be surprised about their own trading results if they would do a similar calculation on their own account.
BTW, is there a way to edit a reply or a post after we hit the POST COMMENT button?
I’m not sure. I’m an admin and there is for me, but not sure for other users….
